20 years ago seems like yesterday.
We were lucky enough to be at the Meadowlands for the game 3 double ot win and the first calls of “Matteau, Matteau, Matteau!”
Game 7 saw us watching from our couch, screaming with what little voices we had been able to recoup from screaming at the live game days before. Everything hung in the balance with this game. A trip to the Stanley Cup finals, breaking the 40 year old curse, and marriage. Marriage?
I had made THE cardinal mistake with 7.7 seconds to go in the 3rd period. I had declared the Rangers to be winners. Then, the Devils scored.
Now, not unlike the scene in “Diner”, my whole future hung in the balance of a sports team.
So there we sat, screaming at the television for the first OT, no winning goal in sight. Second OT, Matteau to the rescue again, and crisis averted.
I sometimes sit and wonder what would have happened if the Rangers lost that game. Some other life, in a parallel universe, could have been quite different than the one I live today.
